Design motivations and technical specifications

The Green Cruiser 50 is synonymous with: green, comfort, and performance. A composite of bamboo fibre/epoxy resin was chosen as the main material of construction due to the benefit in the net balance of emissions. The availability of the natural fibre on a large scale, similar techniques in manufacture and good mechanical properties make it possible to replace traditional glass fibre almost completely. Surface treatments of oil and wax are applied to the interior panels, most of which are structural and visible. For the exterior working surfaces, treatments with low environmental impact are selected and the topsides of the hull is treated with photovoltaic paint. This completes a spectrum of choices to preserve the environment and maximize use of available energy resources. The arrangement of space maximizes the areas for relaxation and maintains privacy. It was decided to equip each cabin with a private head, including the skipper's. All manoeuvres are handled from the steering area, as all lines are led to this point beneath the deck. In this way, the seating area of the cockpit and the stern sun deck remain accessible and free of potential dangers. A transom door provides a swim platform and access to the tender storage. Maximum beam is carried with a chine to the transom for stability, and is combined with an innovative system for handling ballast. This keel achieves the goal of increasing the sailing performance while at the same time limits displacement, at only 2m draft, most notably without impacting the interior space.

REASONS OF THE VICTORY

First of all the absolutely innovative and ecological approach. The boat excited everybody, not only because it properly answered all the competition rules requirements (long range capacity, small crew, low environmental impact, deck and interiors living), but also for the originality and the highly innovative content of all the proposed solutions, especially in the appendixes, and in the very unique pending ballast. Of course this new idea has a lot of limits in terms of reproducibility on an industrial scale, but it revolutionizes the point of view, provoking a big interest in deeper investigations. The common feeling was that of being in front of a project, which is ahead: also leaving out the most original aspects of the steering and the bulb, this is definitively a very good yacht, with an intelligent deck layout and a more than useful interior, with a great aesthetic personality too. The hull, even if less spectacular than the others, has a clean line, modern and at the same time enough timeless, not being subject to the dictates of fashion. The general impression was that of being in front of a project carried out with the maximum zeal and care for researchEasy solutions, and solutions that must be investigated. Probably some of them are not practical, in terms of reproducibility, but this is the aim of Next Sly Contest: a new fresh vision, coming from a different perspective.
